EATON, BENJAMIN B. - Born in 1811 in England. A St. Paul carpenter in business with his brother, Alonzo Eaton, in 1849. His real estate holdings were valued at $600 in 1850. He and his wife Ann (1821 England) had at least four children: Mary (1843 WI), Amelia (1845 WI), Adelaide (1847 WI), and Cecelia (1848 WI). [WM267, MN50]
EBINGER, JACOB - Born in 1820 in Germany. A stonemason in St. Paul in 1850. [MN50]
EDWARDS, MARY ANNIE - From Fayetteville, NC, she was the fourth wife of Stanislaus Bilanski of St. Paul. In 1859, Bilanski died under suspicious circumstances that showed that he had been poisoned. Mary was arrested for the crime when a woman who had been employed by the family reported that she had purchased arsenic for Mrs. Bilansky. Mrs. Bilanski was tried, convicted, and hanged that same year, the only woman ever to be executed in the state of Minnesota. She had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since childhood, up until the night before her execution. A priest had visited her that evening, and she converted to Catholicism. EMERSON, JOHN - Dr. Emerson was the military surgeon at Fort Snelling in the late 1830's, and a strong supporter of Major Lawrence Taliaferro, the resident Indian Agent, in his active opposition of whiskey sales to the Native American community. Emerson, a slaveholder while stationed at Fort Snelling, was the owner of Dred Scott, subject of the famous U.S. Supreme Court decision named for him. [WM46,78ff]

EVANS [EBINS], WILLIAM - Evans was an Irishman who was discharged from the 5th Regiment at Fort Snelling at the same time as Edward Phelan and John Hays in 1837. He was called as a witness in Phelan's trial for Hays' murder. He married Mrs Mortimore following the death of her husband. He selected for his claim a spot on Dayton's Bluff near the Dayton Mansion, and lived there a dozen or more years. He subsequently moved to Cottage Grove, Washington County, where he farmed.
