Pitcairn Island is not only one of the most isolated places on the face of the Earth, it is also one of the most interesting. Many people throughout the world collect Pitcairn-related objects. While the Islanders are more self-sufficient than the citizens of many larger countries, there remains a pressing need for foreign exchange in order to purchase fuel, vehicles, some building supplies, radio and electronic equipment, and other foreign necessities. The production and sale of Island specialty items accounts for much of their income, with most sales going to the passengers of military and cruise ships and private yachts who detour from normal shipping lanes to stop by the island.

For many years, additional sales have been made by mail, usually sparked by word-of-mouth, with very satisfied customers telling their friends of these truly unique gift items. Now, offshore Friends of the Bounty and Pitcairn who have a presence on the Internet, are anxious to introduce their fellow netizens to one of the most unusual shopping sites in Cyberspace today.

We apologize if the product pictures in this "on-line catalog" do not look very good on your monitor screen. In order to get the full effect, you really have to view them in 256-bit color. Please take our word, however, that the art items are truly beautiful, and the pictures, even with reduced quality, should give you some idea.

Pitcairn Island Carvings, Art, and Gift Items

The islanders themselves produce hand-carved gifts, a skill that dates back to 1823, when seaman John Buffett agreed to stay on Pitcairn as the first schoolteacher from abroad. A woodcarver himself, he taught his techniques to his friends and neighbors. Other hand crafted items include basket weaving, and a unique Pitcairn craft, painted leaves. These are truly individual works of art, and among the most unique gift items that can be purchased in the world today. All pictures of items approximate the look of the item, but each is hand carved by an Island resident, and can differ slightly from the pictured items. These are not mass-produced carvings, they are individual works of art, dependent upon the imagination of the creator, and the shape of the piece of wood used .

Books, Newspapers, & Magazines About Pitcairn, Norfolk, and the Mutiny on the Bounty

Over 3,000 books and articles have been written about the Pitcairners, the Mutiny on the HMS Bounty that started this community of wonderful people, and the Norfolk Island community that was formed when the Pitcairners were forceably removed there "for their own good" in 1856. Several families had returned to their Pitcairn home within a decade.

Travel and Cruises

Because Pitcairn is so far from normal shipping channels, and because of its lack of a safe harbor, arranging visits to Pitcairn is neither easy nor low cost. But for the adventurous south seas traveler, Pitcairn is not an unattainable dream. You CAN visit Pitcairn. And for less adventuresome Bounty enthusiasts, Norfolk Island is a vacation spot worth considering.

The Norfolk Connection

Norfolk Island is located east of Queensland, Australia, and northwest of New Zealand. The island is far larger than Pitcairn, with a safer spot for offloading passengers and cargo from ships (not a true harbor, however), airport, and a population of about 2,000. Begun as a prison colony, Norfolk became the home of many of the descendants of the Bounty mutineers who settled originally on Pitcairn. In 1856, the British Government forceably relocated the population of Pitcairn to the far more accessible Norfolk. This relocation was welcomed by many, but two extended families yearned for their Pitcairn home, and returned to repopulate their old Island. Most Bounty-descended Norfolkers are 4th or 5th cousins to their relatives on Pitcairn.
