Pitcairn - Ethnology

LUMMIS, Trevor. Pitcairn Island: Life and Death in Eden
This is an ethnological account of the dramatic and little-known history of the Bounty mutineers after they settled on Pitcairn Island. Within a few years of landing on the island, nearly all the men had died violent deaths -- some at each others' hands, some at the hands of their Tahitian "wives." Conflicts over property, race, and gender brought this group close to total destruction, but the society did survive and renew itself. It examines the new community of Pitcairn Islanders that arose out of the clashes of cultures and individual will. Many of the issues, such as women's rights, are now echoed in the world at large. Pitcairn - Life & Living Conditions

BIRKETT, Dea. Serpent in Paradise.
Not your routine travel book is Serpent in Paradise. The Englishwoman Dea Birkett adds to the pile of Pitcairn Island paraphernalia. Hers is no Mutiny on the Bounty drama, but an acutely honest observation of unique folkways in a tiny society. For civil works requirements if not for the risk of inbreeding, maybe Pitcairn ought to review its immigration policy. After the devil's own job securing permission and transport, Birkett finds less than 40 residents on arrival. Over the course of several months, she dabbles in an unwise affair, nearly masters the muddy paths, and studies sympathetically the islanders' unusual patois and subliminal decision-making processes. You would think that Birkett's frankness would warn off romantics in search of a carefree Pacific retreat. However, the Pitcairn home page suggests that the population has grown slightly since her visit several years ago." (Review by Stephen P. Saunders, Canberra Times). Use Search at Amazon.Com Books.
CARLSSON, Susanne Chauvel Pitcairn: Island at the Edge of Time.
Today's Pitcairners are the direct descendants of the infamous mutineers on the Bounty over 200 years ago. Despite bloodshed and brutal murders, and with the help of the Bible, they became a pious and productive South Sea Island community lost at the edge of time. Courageous and resourceful, they made their own longboats and defied the stormy seas to trade with passing ships. Famous film-makers, Charles and Elsa Chauvel, starred Errol Flynn in their 1933 movie, In the Wake of the Bounty, parts of which were shot on Pitcairn. Charles and Elsa in 1932, their daughter and author of this book Susanne in 1984 and Susanne's son Rick in 1997 made three generations of pilgrimages to Pitcairn Island. Their experiences and research make this an intimate and wonderful book. Central Queensland University Press, RRP $24.95.
