Notes for MATHIAS JOSEPH BURCH
"Joe" Burch, as he was known to everyone, served in the Indian
Wars with Troop "B", 6th Cavalry (1880-1885). After his military
experiences, of which he was extraordinarily proud, he returned
to Detroit.
After a short-lived attempt at cigarmaking, he
entered the florist business, and for many years maintained a
large greenhouse behind his Detroit home. He entered the postal
service in 1886, was one of the 12 charter members of the Detroit
Letter Carrier's Association, and was instrumental in instituting
many national postal reforms. In 1898, he enlisted in the
Spanish-American War. Upon his return, he went back to the
postal service, staying there until his retirement in 1920. He
spent his remaining 12 years traveling throughout the United
States participating in postal and veteran's conventions and
activities.
