Moved to Chicago in 1919. She had been very depressed about living alone on the farm after the death of her husband, and her daughter was equally depressed after the death of her first born the previous year. Martha was a very tall woman, wit
h very light skin, a large "patrician" nose, and the manners of a "proper southern lady". Quite a contrast with her short, rather chunky, intellectual daughter.
