Throughout its history, Drakians, led by the dwarven population, have utilized their subterranian spaces well. Lacking the excavation power of more developed societies, this pre-industrial planet has utilized these natural spaces for living, disposal of obnoxious wastes, and as an entry into the mineral-rich crust. But 1,300 years ago, gasses from the universally used coal and wood fuel began a cycle of global warming that triggered an alarming natural catastrope. Some academics feel that increased solar activity enhanced the melting process, which proceeded much more quickly than had been predicted.
Drak's poles had always been fragile. Little if any land surface lies beneath the the polar icecaps, The warming trend melted almost all of the ice of the southern pole, and half of the ice of the northern pole which was considerably thicker. The added water began to inundate many low lying regions. But in the year 1729 PK (1,280 years ago), the rumbling of a massive earthquake signaled the beginning of a 683 year period that would see the destruction of Drak's oldest, largest, and most populated continent as the added weight of water broke through the subterranian honeycomb structure, causing it to sink with a loss of about 25% of the planet's relatively sparse population.
Over 215,000 years ago, a small colony ship from a technically advanced civilization landed on the planet which, at the point, teemed with animal and plant life, but had no indigenous intelligent life. Settling in a very isolated part of the planet, the Drakatoj, as they called themselves, lived and thrived for a hundred thousand years prior to the planet's oldest recorded history. The Drakatoj eventually dispersed to other parts of their new world, but found that a natural radiation common to all other parts of Drak, speeded the rate of evolution rather noticeably. This resulted in the eventual differentiation of the races of the planet, quite different in appearance, but similar and compatable in genetic makeup. Descended from the Drakatoj are humans, felines. spirits, vespers, dwarves, elves, orcs, catlings (halflings), phantoms (gargoyles), and felisprits. There are no relationships to the animal population of the planet.
The population that remained in its original settlement, less affected by the planetary radiation, retained many of the characteristics of the original Drakatoj. In addition, although the original Drakatoj had no knowledge of their home world or how long they had been in space, three non-Drakatoj races made contact in prehistorical times. One of these brought some unusual technology, another has retained minimal contact with the planet to the present day. Because of the fear of what would happen if extra-terrestrial technology and knowledge were loosed upon this very successful medieval civilization, the existance and location of the original settlement is unknown to all but a handful of Drakians.
