THE DRAKIAN CALENDAR
![]()
The Drakian year consists of 400 (plus a fraction) Drakian days due to its somewhat longer orbit around its slightly larger sun (compared to Earth). Each day is divided into 10 periods (Drakian hours), and each of these periods is divided into 100 subperiods (Drakian minutes), and each of these is divided into 100 subsubperiods (Drakian seconds). For purposes of comparison, and these are approximations only, a Drakian second is very close in length to an Earth second. A Drakian minute is almost twice as long as an Earth minute, at 100 seconds. A Drakian hour is nearly 3 times longer than an Earth hour, at 10000 seconds compared to 3600 seconds on Earth. However, with only 10 Drakian hours in a day, a Drakian day is only about 16% longer than an Earth day, 100,000 seconds to 86,400 seconds. This reflects Drak's slightly slower rate of revolution.
Although notation varies within different cultures, a standard notation, developed fairly recently by the Sepdomoj and used primarily for trade, is HMM (Example: 877, meaning 77 minutes after the 8th hour). Seconds are rarely used by average citizens, and the use of "exact time" is less pronounced than in some other more hurried societies. There are no time zones, per se, and 877 will be the time throught the world, even though in some places it will be daylight, and elsewhere it will be nightime. 000 is astronomical "midnight" on Chaton Island, the headquarters of the Sepdomoj Trading Cartel.
As on Earth, there are four seasons, but due to the decreased tilt of the planet, they are of fairly equal length Drak-wide, and are measured as 100 Drakian days. Also, due to the watery nature of the planet, seasons are generally milder than on Earth at all latitudes, though the average temperature overall is slightly colder. Drakian days are measured from the first day of each season, which for convenience, we can translate as Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. The first day of the Drakian year is considered to be the first day of Spring, and it is one of the most festive holidays of the year virtually everywhere on Drak.
Drak's lack of a significant moon (it has several quite small ones) means that there is no equivalent to the concept of an Earth month. The nearest Drakian concept of an Earth week is 10 Drakian days which has some specialized use, but is fairly meaningless to the average person. Days of the Drakian 10-day week are not named.
Drakian history is universally divided into four periods:
ANTAU ALVENO (AA) is a nebulous concept in the minds of most Drakians. The term means "Before the Coming", and refers to the period before the Drakatoj were said to have arrived on Drak. Most Drakians believe that the planet was uninhabited by sentient beings prior to that time, although many believe that some animals and lower life forms did exist on the planet far before 1 PA. No fossel record extends into this period, and "years" are not enumerated. In reality, Drak's actual history reaches back 155,000 years before the date Drakians believe the arrival of the Drakatoj occurred. More information on this early period is documented in the history of Chielio.
POST ALVENO (PA) begins with the supposed arrival of the Drakotoj. This occurrance is considered a religious rather than scientific issue. The earliest datable fossel record of any habitation by Drakatoj descendants is estimated as being 9,000 years after the arrival. The latest evidence of living Drakatoj as a separate racial group dates to 22000 PA. Katoj and Vesper fossils first begin to appear at about 19000 PA. The latest evidence of Katoj is about 35000 PA. Lynxen and Spirit fossils are first seen about 33000 PA, and the last known living Lynxen died in 55231 PA on what is now Arkramio Island. Human and Feline fossils so far appear no earlier than 49000 PA.
Dates in the PA epoch actually have been calculated on the basis of the "Kalendro-Spirita", one of the oldest evidences of written language, which dates religious events of early millenia. Because it declares that it was written 50000 years after the arrival of the Drakatoj, it is dated as 50001 PA.
POST KALENDRO (PK) begins with the revealing of the Great Calendar, an invention that is assumed to have happened in the year 58780 PA, the generally accepted last year of that epoch. PK was a relatively short period in Drakian history, lasting only 2412 years, during which many modern nations were founded, and the greatest tragedy ever to hit the planet occurred. In the year 1729 PK, the first of the 9 great earthquakes that ultimately destroyed the ancient continent of Ark-Kram occurred. These massive earthquakes, which occurred at roughly 50-year intervals until the last one in 2212 PK, caused (or were caused by) a combination of global warming and the collapse of Ark-Kram's massive deep natural tunneling that underlies much of Drak's very honeycombed structure. By 2212 PK, what had been the third largest continent on Drak had disappeared beneath what is now the Unending Ocean, leaving only many tiny islands and treacherous reefs. Over those 500 years, millions upon millions of people of all races lost their lives. In 2212 PK, the Conference of Clerical Intercession (CCI), made up of representatives of nearly every religion on Drak, was founded to pray for an end to the Great Earthquakes. After 200 years of constant prayer, with no further earthquakes, the CCI declared that they were over. That declaration also announced that a new epoch, dedicated to all the Gods in the heavens, would begin.
POST ONDEGO (PO), which means "after the great wave" in the ancient language of the Drakatoj, was the beginning of the modern era in Drakian history. Much of Drak's earliest history was lost with Ark-Kram, which was the continent on which the Drakatoj originally settled, and further evidence of their earlier life and culture has been irretrievably lost. Ark-Kram was also the most heavily populated of the continents, and only a tiny proportion (estimated at 7%) of its population escaped to settle elsewhere. As this document is being written, it is currently the year 597 PO, equating with 1998 on Earth.
