Welcome to the DungeonZ home page. DungeonZ is a freeware game, currently in alpha state. This means it is not done. More to the point, it means the game is not finished being designed or programed and that any version that is released is considered "use at your own risk" - untested code. If that hasn't scared you off, then feel free to have a look around. e-mail me at karl@lareau.org if you have any questions, comments or suggestions about the site or the game.

About the game

DungeonZ, pronounced dungeons, not dungeon zee, is very much a work in progress. Even the name is subject to change. DungeonZ is a Role Playing Game (RPG) set in a fantasy adventure world - swords, dragons, dungeons - that sort of thing.  The plot is the weakest point in the game's development - as it has none - so I won't speak long on that subject. The main town is called Frizberg. Now that you have the plot down...

The game allows you to create a single character by assigning statistic points, and selecting a portrait. The game is your basic, buy equipment, go kill things, collect treasure, buy better equipment type of game. There is an NPC interface, so you will be able to speak to people. And hopefully, once the plot department kicks into gear, they will have something to say. The surface area (i.e. towns and outside areas) take place in a "picture box" type of view. Meaning each area has it own static image - as you move to other areas you will see other images. Dungeons are show in a pseudo 3d engine somewhat akin to the early 3d efforts (pre Doom). Combat is turn based, and relies on statistics from your character and equipment, as well as the opponents statistics and equipment. Magic has not been implemented yet, but...maybe soon. Editing of maps is being written right into the core program, so if you want to make your own maps go right ahead. The art is simple BMP or JPG files, and the sounds are all WAV and MDI files.

Back to the plot. Don't let it be thought that I regard the plot as secondary. In fact the plot is the only thing that will make a smaller game like this stand out. However, my original reason for starting this project was to learn to program, and so my efforts have gone into making it work, rather than defining what it is. Also, I have some friends that have expressed interest in "someday developing a game" who may start some work in the plot department any day now (hint hint).

About the programer

This is my first programing effort in about a decade, and my first major work in Visual Basic. As such it is both fairly simple (at least compared to today's 3d accelerated graphics.) and somewhat quirky. Much of my programing time involves going over code I wrote before and rewriting it better - and subsequently much shorter - as I understand more about programing in general and VB in specific. Also I should note that I am the only one actively working on DungeonZ and my commitment is somewhat sporadic. Usually I have a week long spurt of activity every month or so.

About Alpha (or Beta) testing

Last and not least, this program is in Alpha. Meaning nothing is set in stone, and nothing is guaranteed to work. If you opt to download code, please be aware you do so at your own risk.
