DAY, DAVID - Dr. Day was born at Burke's Garden, VA, in 1825. In 1846, he removed to the lead-mining region of Wisconsin where he followed mining for three years while studing medicine at night, and attending the University of Pennsylvania Medical School during the winters, where he graduated in 1849. He came to St. Paul in the spring of that year and set up a medical practice. In 1854, he entered the drug business and withdrew from the medical profession.
In 1849, he was appointed Registrar of Deeds, and was elected for an additional two year term. He was a member of the legislature in 1852, and Speaker in 1853 from Benton County, where he was temporarily residing. He retired from the drug business in 1866, and was appointed State Prison Inspector in 1871. In 1874, was named one of the Commissioners of State Fisheries, and the next year he was named Postmaster of St. Paul. [WM242, MN50]

DeBOW, JANE - The story of the Gibbs Farm begins in 1833 near Batavia, New York, when 5-year-old Jane DeBow was kidnapped by missionaries traveling west to work among the Mdewakanton Dakota in the area around Fort Snelling. Jane grew up in Minnesota and became very familiar with the Dakota culture. Her fascinating story is told in the children's book Jane Gibbs: Little Bird That Was Caught, to be published by the Ramsey County Historical Society in 1998. Jane DeBow met and married Heman Gibbs in Illinois, and in 1849, the couple moved to what is now Falcon Heights, MN. [See the Gibbs Farm Museum website]

DENOYER, LOUIS - Born at St. Louis, MO, he lived there until moving to St. Paul in the mid-1840's. He married a sister of Louis Robert, and lived on a claim on Phelan's Creek. About 1850, he removed to what is now Belle Plaine, then called "Robert's Creek", where he remained. One of his daughters married James W. Simpson. [WM159]

DESIRE, FRANÇOIS - Also known as Fronchet. He was a native of France, and boasted of having been a soldier with
Napoleon. He was a soldier at Fort Snelling, and in 1836, was employed by Joseph N. Nicollet as an attendant on his expedition toward the Upper Mississippi.
Having spent nearly all his life in the military, Desire did not adjust well to civilian life upon his discharge. He took a claim on the east side of the Mississippi in 1837, and led a lonely, intemperate life, and in 1840, he was expelled from the Reserve with other settlers. In 1842, he came to St. Paul and secured employment from Richard Mortimer, John Irvine, and others doing light labor, then interspersing it with freightful sprees, some lasting two weeks. He came near freezing to death several times while lying unconscious in various places. He was, however, cared for by his many acquaintances, as he was a very kind-hearted, good-humored, and vivacious companion.
Desire lived at St. Paul about 2 years, then went to Elk River, MN, where his was later drowned during one of his sprees. [WM63]
DESMARAIS, JOSEPH - Of French and Chippewa parentage, he was born in the Red River settlement, and came to Fort Snelling as guide and interpreter for the party of refugees with which Joseph Rondo arrived. He settled in St. Paul in 1843, purchasing a piece of ground on which the Merchant's Hotel later stood. He was employed as an interpreter by William Hartshorn, Henry Jackson, and others. He raised a large family in St. Paul, and after the death of his wife, Marie Amenin, in 1847, he removed to the Indian Country where he lived out the remainder of his life. [WM137-8]

DEWEY, JOHN J. - The first regular practicing physician to settle in St. Paul was Dr. John J. Dewey who arrived in 1847. He was a native of New York, and brother of ex-Governor Dewey of Wisconsin. He was a recent graduate of the Albany Medical College, and was heartily welcomed by his new neighbors who, prior to that time, had no other source of medical or surgical intervention other than Fort Snelling. Dr. Dewey was a member of the first Territorial Legislature, and in 1848, he established the first drugstore in St. Paul in partnership with Charles Cavalier. DRED SCOTT DECISION - An 1857 decision of the U.S. Supreme Court that declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional and that Congress had no power to prohibit slavery. The case was brought on behalf of Dred Scott, a slave who had once lived at Fort Snelling, and partially revolved around whether a slave owned by a person from a slave state could legally claim freedom if taken by his or her owner to a free state, for example, while the owner was serving in the military. The decision of the court was overruled by the 13th and 14th amendments to the constitution.

DUGAS, WILLIAM - Dugas was a Canadian millwright who came to St. Paul in 1844. He purchased 160 acres of land on
Phelan's Creek and Falls from Edward Phelan in 1844, and he immediately
employed Charles Bazille, and the two men built a two-story, 25x50 foot grist mill on the site. Unfortunately, due to lack of demand for lumber, the mill was a failure almost from the start, and some 18 months after it was built, Dugas sold the property and mill to Alex McLeod. He married in 1845 in St. Paul, to Suzanne Reche. Dugas then settled in Little Canada, where he was elected to the Territorial Legislature in 1849. He moved back to St. Paul in 1849, then permanently moved up to the Crow River Valley, where he lived out his life. [WM144-5, LR908]
