Remember that these pictures are EXAMPLES of carvings. Each carving is an individual work of art, a sculpture based upon the imagination of the creator along with the shape of the piece of wood used. DIMENSIONS are also approximate, based on the material chosen for the creation. All carvings have the name of the carver somewhere on them.

Once a year, islanders take two open longboats on a risky 110 mile trip to cut MIRO wood on uninhabited Henderson Island. Carvings are generally made from MIRO, TAMANU, and/or TAU wood, depending on the color, texture, and use the carved item is to be put. Each carving takes an individual craftsman/artist several days to make, and time can only be spent on carving when necessary survival tasks are completed.

H.M.S. Bounty Models

The ultimate Pitcairn carving, H.M.S. Bounty models are approximately 12 inches (30 cm) in length, with carved wooden sails, realistic rigging of strong cord, and interesting detail including a stone anchor. The pictures shown here are examples. Each ship is carved individually, and reflects the style of the carver and the materials available.

S/V Pitcairn Models

Available in either a 10", 12" or a 15" version, this is a fine companion piece for your H.M.S. Bounty model.

Longboats

The longboat is Pitcairn's lifeline to the outside world. They are the only means by which people and goods can be brought ashore or put on board an outgoing ship. Their design is a modern version of the sort of boat that carried Lieutenant Bligh and the remainder of his crew to safety after the Bounty mutiny. Pitcairn used this style of longboat until recent years when aluminum longboats have become available. Longboat models are approximately 12 to 20 inches long.

Walking Canes

Hand-carved walking canes, more than simply a decoration, are strongly made to be used. Their shafts are carved from coconut wood, with a bit of cherry for a ring around the top. The heads of the canes are carved from the decorative miro wood. They are of standard 36" length, and come in several different styles. Where the supplier's available designs are [not specified], ask for what you want. It is also a good idea to give second choices.

Pitcairn Wheelbarrows

Based on a design in common use 100 years ago, Pitcairners have built and used this unique style of wheelbarrow since their arrival on the island. In recent years, the introduction of ATV's (All-Terrain Vehicles) have replaced the wheelbarrow for larger loads, but some remain in use for smaller jobs. An interesting detail, Pitcairn wheelbarrows were built with hooks on the end of their handles to avoid losing them going down the Island's steep hills.

Vases

Pitcairn vases are truly a showpiece item for the decorative Miro wood gathered by the Islanders from Henderson Island, and used for all their carving except for their walking canes. Vases come in two styles, the Hand Motif , as pictured, with a hand holding the vase; and Hand-Painted, a plainly carved vase, hand-painted with Bounty- or Pitcairn-related designs, or woodburned with Bounty, dolphin, whale, bird, or fish designs. Their size varies from approximately 12 inches (30 cm) tall to somewhat larger, depending on the price paid.

Name Plates

Miro or Tau wood name plates which your name in orange or pulau wood. Beautifully made personalised to the buyers request. These are made as requested of course and take time as each letter is separately carved. Size is about the same as a license plate for a car.

Also, Tau or Miro Fids for yaughties.

Serving Dishes

These approximately 12 or 15 inch wooden serving dishes will grace your table and provide considerable conversation when you are entertaining. They come in a leaf or a fish design.

Turned Wood Serving Bowls

Available in various sizes from 5 inch (13 cm) to 10 inch (25 cm) sizes, these are useful as candy dishes, salad bowls, and other dining table and decorative uses.

Fish-Shaped Cutting Board

A unique item for the discerning host, not only as a utility cutting board, but as a decorative serving platter for breads, cakes, and coffee cakes.

Doll

Wooden doll, approximately 10" tall. Comes with stand.

Fridge Magnets

Hand made wooden decorative magnets for your refrigerator door or metal bulletin board. Several different styles are available:

Barrette Hairclips

Carved wood. Available in designs: Dolphin, whale, fish, lightning bolt, or a plain oval.
Carved pearl shell. Available in designs: Dolphin, fish, or plain oval.

Wall-Mountable Animals, Birds, & Fish

Imagine a menagerie of denizens of land and sea swimming and flying about a prominent wall in your home. Wall-mountable carvings are flat on one side, are available in many sizes, and in as many shapes as the imagination of the carvers see in the wood they shape. Who better than the Islanders of Pitcairn to sense and capture the spirits of their only near neighbors. An interesting detail, the Pitcairn SHARKS contain real sharks teeth, saved from sharks harvested off the coast for food. Dave Brown also sells flying fish with real teeth (see his sheet).

Freestanding Animals, Birds, & Fish

For that tabletop, or display cabinet, freestanding Birds, Fish, Sharks, Turtles, Dolphins and Whales, some on stands to simulate flight or swimming. As with their wall-mounted brethren, they come in various sizes and shapes. One comment worth mentioning about these carvings is that their uniqueness and rarety virtually guarantee that their value will increase over time. But over and above that, their historical background makes collecting them just plain fun! Some are sold with pedestals, some without.
