"Went into the Night"
Our own 'Huggans' Captain,
Is a fright,
And gone among them.
He's "went into the night,"
Dare we venture,
Into his cabin?
We know not for sure,
For the clothes he was wearin'.
Laid him out in a grave,
We did.
Said the "holy" words of 'God save'
And now he's hid.
Captain, he was a bugger,
My 'Tyo' says of him.
'Only he drinks,'
His life was too dim!
And here we be,
Daily to pass by him.
The Breadfruit tree,
A plantin' and trim.
He be a hauntin us,
He 'went into the night.'
Will Ledward save us,
From not feelin' right?
Aye Captain Bligh,
I hear my Tyo say.
'Pass by, not I',
Oh Huggan's grave.
And I've me work,
Set aside by you.
The 'Bounty's'shook,
By the foot of King Tu.
And I'll be getting along,
With your permission, I'll pass by.
Ole Huggan's, I'll drink to his song,
Of his death, bye and bye.
Not a remissness Captain,
But I've my soul to spare.
In doing my work,
Keep me away from there.
I'll plant your trees,
And dig your roots.
And the Breadfruit I'll free,
Plant her in Jamaica, with fruit.
Help me Captain Bligh,
To look the other way.
In passing Huggan's sign,
While during the day.
My Tyo says, not at night,
"Must one be here".
For at the sight,
The soul will disappear.
To assist Nelson I shall,
It is what 'Banks' ask.
And in the darkness,
I keep handy my flask.
We learn all so quickly,
My dear Captain Bligh.
"Went into the night" strictly,
Can be a fearsome way to die.
What sayest you,
To the botanist William Brown?
Stay away from Huggan's will do,
Till we reach Kingston Town.
We've much Captain to do,
Though I cannot despair.
With Nelson it's true,
Breadfruit cannot be repaired.
We'll cut and we'll plant,
And a pot shall give way.
The 'fodder' will slant,
But Jamaica will save the day.
