QITLAN - HISTORY
![]()
In 210 PK, with the assumption of power by Ghuri al Dio, the deeply religious tribes of the Qitlan Wastes asserted a god-given right to power over the mountains along the west coast of the country, and began a successful two-hundred year march, described historically as bringing the word of god to the heathens of the south. The "heathens" had a tendency to object, but lack of organization meant that the very much more technically advanced Qitlans met little resistance until the reached the forests south of Paaz.
The beliefs and living conditions in present day Qitlan strongly reflect the ancient heritage of this most venerable of Felinian nations. Religious beliefs to this day are somewhat derogatory toward Spirits and Vespers, considering them to be defective creatures, "Dieraroj" (God's mistakes) in the ancient language, however more enlightened and educated Qitlans take most of those beliefs as remnants of a long past age. Isolated pockets of rural believers, especially in the mountain valleys, still hate and fear flying beings.
The University at Paaz, the oldest educational institution on Felinio, is a center for learning for students throughout Drak. Virtually every skill and discipline, both religious and profane, is taught here, and its graduates have led nations and educational institutions for centuries. Graduation from this prestigious university virtually guarantees success in most parts of Drak. Unique among universities, no charge is made to students who are accepted, but only the most intelligent and hard working among them will successfully master the rigorous study. Fewer than 10% graduate.
Qitlan is also known as the country where the Sepdomoj Trading Cartel began, and although there are few ties remaining, there is a certain pride among Qitlans at the success of this Drak-wide business venture.
